Do Carnivorous Plants Need a Winter Nap? A 2026 Dormancy Guide

September is a good month to look at your carnivorous plants and ask an important question: is that Venus flytrap slowing down, or is it staging a tiny botanical protest?

For many temperate carnivorous plants, the answer is neither. The plant is preparing for dormancy, a natural winter rest that helps it conserve energy and return to strong growth in spring. Fall is the time to make small care changes before shorter days and cooler nights do the heavy lifting.

Dormancy matters for more than Venus flytraps. Sarracenia pitcher plants, temperate sundews such as Drosera filiformis, and temperate butterworts also follow a seasonal rhythm. Tropical species, including Nepenthes and tropical sundews such as Drosera capensis, usually keep growing year-round and should not be chilled just because the calendar says winter.

Why do temperate carnivorous plants go dormant?

In the wild, these plants experience shorter days and cooler nights every autumn. Those signals tell the plant to slow active growth and store energy in an underground structure, such as a rhizome or hibernaculum.

A Venus flytrap may produce smaller traps. Older leaves can turn black. A Sarracenia may stop making its tallest summer pitchers, while a temperate sundew can shrink down into a tight resting bud. None of this means your plant has given up on life. It has simply switched from “catch bugs” to “save energy.”

North Carolina State University describes the Venus flytrap as a temperate perennial native to the coastal plain of the Carolinas, not a tropical houseplant. Its dormancy generally runs from late fall into early spring. The New York Botanical Garden’s Venus flytrap care guide also notes that indoor plants may grow without dormancy under strong, consistent artificial light, though a winter rest can benefit many home-grown plants.

Think of dormancy as a seasonal maintenance window. The plant is still there, even if it looks less impressive for a while.

Which carnivorous plants need a winter rest?

Venus flytraps, or Dionaea muscipula, are the familiar example. Mature plants naturally slow down as light levels fall and nights cool. They may retain a few traps, but those traps often become smaller and less active.

Sarracenia pitcher plants also need a seasonal rest. Their pitchers may brown from the top down, and some species produce flat, non-carnivorous leaves during the cooler months. The New York Botanical Garden’s Sarracenia guide recommends three to five months of winter dormancy for native pitcher plants, with lower temperatures, reduced day length, and damp growing media.

Temperate sundews follow a different-looking pattern. Species such as Drosera filiformis can form a hibernaculum, which is a compact winter bud near the soil surface. The long, sticky leaves disappear, leaving a small resting structure behind. It may look like a green-brown button that has misplaced its ambition. Come spring, new leaves emerge as temperatures and day length increase.

Temperate butterworts, including hardy Pinguicula species, also form winter rosettes or resting buds. Their summer leaves may shrink away, leaving smaller, thicker leaves that are less focused on trapping prey. Which species do not need dormancy?

Tropical carnivorous plants come from regions without the same cold winter pattern. Nepenthes, often called tropical pitcher plants, generally prefer warm temperatures and bright light throughout the year. A refrigerator is not a wellness retreat for them.

Tropical sundews, such as Drosera capensis, can also grow continuously when they receive suitable light, warmth, and moisture. They may slow down in a dim home during winter, but that is a response to poor growing conditions rather than a required cold dormancy.

Some butterworts are tropical or subtropical too. Check the species or cultivar before moving a plant into a cold garage. If you are unsure, compare it with the care information from your grower or browse Frond and Fang’s carnivorous plant collection.

The simplest rule is this: temperate species need a winter rest, while tropical species need stable growing conditions. Plant labels matter here.

How do you prepare a plant for dormancy?

Start by watching the plant rather than forcing an abrupt change. As September turns into October and daylight shortens, active growth should begin to slow. Cooler nights reinforce the signal.

Stop feeding once the plant is clearly entering dormancy. A plant that is not producing active traps or pitchers has little use for extra insects. Skip fertilizer as well. Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-poor media, and ordinary houseplant fertilizer can damage their roots.

Reduce watering gradually. During active growth, many bog species sit in a shallow water tray. In cold dormancy, that constant saturation can increase the risk of rot. Let the water level fall, then water again before the growing medium becomes dry. Your goal is soil that feels slightly damp, like a wrung-out sponge, rather than soil that feels like a soaked towel.

Use distilled water, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water. Tap water can contain minerals that build up in the medium and harm sensitive roots.

Remove only leaves, traps, or pitchers that are fully brown or black. Green tissue may still be helping the plant store energy. For Drosera filiformis, leave the hibernaculum alone. It is the plant’s winter headquarters, not a bit of debris waiting for cleanup.

Care note: This is general guidance for carnivorous plant care. Use only insect-safe practices and avoid fertilizers/“miracle” additives unless they’re specifically labeled safe for carnivorous plants. Standing water and high humidity can increase mold/algae: monitor and adjust as needed. If you have pets/kids, keep plants and any feeder insects out of reach.

Where can you overwinter temperate carnivorous plants?

A cool porch can work well if it stays protected from harsh wind, extended deep freezes, and sudden temperature swings. An unheated garage or basement may also work, provided temperatures stay cool rather than warm. A basement window or nearby ambient light is useful, but a fully dormant plant does not need grow lights.

For indoor growers, aim for roughly 45 days at around 45°F. That gives the plant a practical cold rest without asking you to turn your home into a Carolina bog. Some mature plants benefit from a longer rest closer to eight to ten weeks or more, especially when they are grown under warm conditions for the rest of the year. Follow the needs of the species and avoid repeated short rests if the plant starts coming back weakly each spring.

The refrigerator method can help growers in warm climates, but it deserves caution. Use the main refrigerator compartment, never the freezer. Keep the plant potted or place its rhizome or hibernaculum in barely damp sphagnum. The material should be moist, not dripping. Use a ventilated bag or container, label the plant, and check it regularly for mold or rot.

A refrigerator is dark, which is acceptable during hard dormancy. Do not store fruit beside the plant if you can avoid it, since ripening produce releases gases that may affect plant tissue. Keep the temperature steady, and never let the plant freeze.

Do dormant plants need light?

It depends on the overwintering setup.

A plant resting naturally outdoors or on a cool porch may receive winter daylight. That is perfectly fine. A plant in a cool garage may also benefit from some ambient light, especially if it is still carrying green tissue.

A plant in a refrigerator does not need light while dormant. Its metabolism has slowed enough that darkness is not a problem. Keep the focus on temperature, moisture, and airflow.

Avoid placing a dormant plant beside a radiator or heating vent. Warmth can push the plant toward active growth while winter light remains too weak to support it. That combination often creates pale, stretched growth and unnecessary stress.

How do you know when dormancy is over?

Spring provides two clear signals: longer days and new growth. Venus flytraps begin unfurling larger traps from the center. Sarracenia send up fresh pitchers. A temperate sundew expands from its hibernaculum, while a butterwort begins producing its active summer rosette.

Move gradually. Bring plants from a refrigerator, garage, or basement into brighter and warmer conditions over several days. Increase watering as growth resumes, returning to the normal tray method for species that need it. Wait until new growth is clearly active before feeding.

A few old leaves may remain brown after the plant wakes up. Remove them once they are fully dead, but do not panic if the spring restart is slow. Plants do not all wake on the same morning. Some apparently sleep through the first alarm.

Dormancy is one of the most useful parts of carnivorous plant care because it gives you permission to do less. Identify the species, keep the medium slightly damp, protect the plant from extremes, and let the season work. With the right winter rest, your flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews, and temperate butterworts can return in spring ready for another year of wonderfully strange growth.
