Blue Spikemoss (Selaginella emmeliana) is a compact, moss-like fern relative with fine, scale-like foliage that forms soft, creeping mounds of green to bluish-green texture, perfect for terrariums, paludariums, and shaded containers. Its low, spreading habit makes it an excellent foreground or filler plant around hardscape and larger tropicals, adding a lush “forest floor” look without overwhelming nearby specimens.
This species thrives in consistently moist, well-draining, slightly acidic substrate (such as an ABG-style or peat/coir-based mix) and absolutely hates drying out, so the soil should stay evenly damp but never waterlogged. Blue Spikemoss prefers cool to warm temperatures around 60–75°F, high humidity (ideally 70%+), and low to medium, indirect light—too much direct sun can scorch the delicate foliage, while very low light keeps its growth compact and terrarium-friendly.
For best results, grow it in a closed or semi-closed terrarium or group it with other humidity-loving plants, mist regularly, and avoid cold drafts or blasts from AC and heaters. Fertilizer needs are minimal; if desired, apply a very dilute, balanced feed only a few times per year, and trim back the creeping stems occasionally to maintain a dense, cushiony mat.
Carnivorous plants make a great gift for your green friend, but they're not puppies!
Before you purchase a living gift for someone, be sure they understand and can provide for their requirements. It's not hard. But some plants are not very forgiving.
